Resume No Nos

One of the things I notice with resumes are previous jobs that have no relation to the current position the person is trying to get.

If you are looking for a .Net position, I don't need to know that you were a pizza delivery driver. I understand that you had to work through school, but to be honest I do not think it will help too much. I can't say I wasn't a victim of this... My resume had that I was a waiter while in school... Thinking it would show I was able to talk with others and that I have good communication skills. I now know that me being a Server probably didn't wow any companies.

Another thing I have noticed is a lot of programmer put which video games they are good at on their resume...

I understand.. I like playing video games.. (check me on NHL 2012 @ RNPATTY) but you wont see this in my resume "VB.Net, Level 15 on NHL online, SQL Server"

Resume Formatting

So a trick I learned when I was a developer, was Notepad is the best anti-formatter. If I ever needed to get rid of the default formatting for documents, I would open Notepad and paste them in there then copy it again into a word doc... Perfect!

I have noticed in the Recruiting industry, it works the exact same way. If there is a resume that I need to shape up, I will cut (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+X) it and paste (Ctrl+V) it into Notepad to help me out.

The worst type of formatting I run into is the columns.. I think it looks nice, but when I am trying to fix a resume up, that seems to be the part that gets me.

I like nice looking resumes... Headers, bullets, listed out skills, but the best resumes are ones that line up. It bothers me big time when I see a resume that has bullets and the candidates sometimes use a space after the bullets and other times they don't.. pick one way and stick with it!

Welcome to Recruiting

I recently became a recruiter... (let me review my LinkedIn account http://www.linkedin.com/in/nickkoch) about 6 months ago. I have noticed a lot of the challenges in the business. It is hard to trust anyone because at any moment one of the parties can change their minds.

My very first potential hire accepted the job on a Friday (I was so excited) then as I come in Monday.. still getting cheers from my co-worker.. I get told he has taken another offer...WELCOME TO RECRUITING!

Job Listings on Facebook

Today, I read that Facebook will start allowing free job postings. That could be an extreme game changer! Why use the job boards when you are a looking for candidates if you have a free site and oh yea (place number of Facebook members here) people on a certain site. I think it is a great move by Facebook!
